You probably know George and Martha Washington were an iconic married couple, but you might not have realized how it all came about.
Here’s the tea (but not the Boston Harbor kind of tea). ☕
Martha’s first husband was Daniel Parke Custis. He was one of the wealthiest men in Virginia with more than 17,500 acres in six different counties.
When he died in 1757, he left behind two children and a very wealthy, attractive, 26-year-old widow. Her wealth gave her a great deal of freedom which allowed her to marry her choice of men, or to remain single.
She chose George Washington. 💘 And that changed his life forever. With her wealth and influence, he became a prosperous gentleman farmer and had the connections to for his achievements to get noticed by the right people.
↪️ Which led to him making a name for himself on a national scale.
↪️ Getting named General Washington.
↪️ And getting named Commander-in-Chief.
↪️ And being elected our First President, in 1789.
